I received a question today about pay rule possibilities in Workbrain. The requirement was to cause a premium to be paid at the beginning of the week, based on employee's work completed in the remaining portion of the week. Without extra configuration, anyone familiar with the pay rule engine knows that each day's pay is calculated individually and only when changes such as clocks or other overrides are made to that day. And additionally, the pay rule engine can only edit the pay (i.e. work details) on the current day it is processing. So how could we cause the first day of the week to recalculate pay for the week, without actually having to make such changes to that day? The Auto-Recalculation functionality of course.
The Auto-Recalculation functionality will cause the engine to calculate the pay for the day that just received changes, and then be set to recalculate the pay for an entire period, usually for that week or pay period. For example, suppose clocks were just applied on Friday of a Sunday to Saturday week. Assuming the recalculation functionality is set to the week, we'd see that the engine would first calculate the pay for Friday, then it would calculate Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc. all the way to Saturday.
In our requirement above, the premium can be added at the beginning of the week because the Friday was processed first, and then proceeds to reprocess the Sunday, thus allowing access to the latest Friday records. Now we have a premium on Sunday!
Next time, I'll combine this issue with a secondary requirement presented at the same time: weekly overtime and holidays.
